OpenAI Codex release notes: 0.163.0 adds searchable settings

OpenAI Codex CLI 0.163.0 adds a searchable preferences panel through /config. You can search across categories, change supported settings immediately, and see which changes require a restart. Codex CLI is OpenAI's terminal-based coding agent. The release shipped on October 15, 2026, and is the stable npm version when checked on October 16.

OpenAI Codex release notes: search settings with /config

The panel groups preferences under Appearance, Notifications, Input, Sessions, and Text selection. Search covers all groups and shows which group each result belongs to. Your query stays in place when you switch groups.

Changes are saved to the selected local configuration file. The panel shows save errors, configuration overrides, and restart requirements. Settings for animations, composer stars, paste detection, automatic recaps, and tips can now change without restarting Codex. That does not mean every setting can change during a session.

Human step: open the panel in Codex

In the terminal interface on version 0.163.0, type /config. Search for the setting you want to change and check the panel for restart requirements or configuration overrides. This is an interface command, not an agent prompt.

The panel also links to existing editors for the theme, status line, terminal title, and keyboard. Local configuration editors remain usable while disconnected.
