Google Workspace Admin Assist: draft the brief before your next change

One setting in the Google Admin console can affect the whole organization. Google has now added Admin Assist to the console for customers on Business editions. A super admin can get step-by-step help and search for answers without jumping between the console and several help pages.
Start with the next change already in the queue. Ask Gemini to draft a change brief before you touch the setting.
What Google Workspace Admin Assist does
Admin Assist has two parts:
- The side panel is available through the One Google Bar on most Admin console pages. Super admins can use it for help with complex tasks, administrative best practices, and step-by-step guidance.
- Search Overviews appear when you ask a question in the main Admin console search bar. They summarize relevant Google Workspace Help Center articles and present next steps.
The feature is available now and is on by default for super admins on Business Starter, Business Standard, and Business Plus. Delegated admins do not have access.

The workflow: write the brief before the change
Choose one real change that needs to be made, such as adjusting a sharing rule for a specific group. Keep the scope to one setting and a defined set of users.
Human step: Sign in as a super admin, open the relevant page in the Admin console, and launch Admin Assist from the One Google Bar.
Paste this template into the side panel:
I need to assess this change in Google Workspace:
[GOAL AND AFFECTED USERS]
Draft a short change brief before I do anything.
Include:
- the setting that is probably relevant and where to find it
- the users or organizational units that may be affected
- what I should check before and after the change
- a possible rollback path
- links to the Google sources behind your guidance
Flag anything you cannot verify. Do not change any setting.
Use the answer as a draft. A person then checks five things:
- You read the current value in the console instead of accepting a value inferred from a help article.
- The scope names the exact users, groups, or units affected.
- The before-and-after check can be carried out without interpretation.
- The rollback explains how to return to the previous state if the result is wrong.
- The source links point to the right Google documentation for your edition.
Use Search Overviews as a second check
Ask this in the main Admin console search bar before saving the change:
Which users are affected by [SETTING], and what should I check before and after changing it?
Compare the Search Overview with the side panel brief. If they point to different settings or a different scope, a person needs to resolve the difference. Do not save the change until that is clear.
Google describes Search Overviews as summaries of Workspace Help Center articles. Treat the answer as a route to the right documentation. Check the actual setting and its current value in the console.

Save a short change receipt
Add these fields to the bottom of the ticket or operations log:
- Date and responsible admin
- Purpose of the change
- Affected users or organizational units
- Current and planned values
- Links to the brief
- Post-change check
- Rollback path
- Reviewer
This takes a few minutes and gives the next admin a documented baseline for troubleshooting. If the same type of change keeps coming back, the brief can become the start of a shared admin guide instead of another loose note.
When these changes recur, Hammer Automation's Tool Forge can turn the briefs into reusable, reviewed workflows that more than one person can run.
