This Week's Must-Know AI Developments
Anthropic Upgrades Claude Code with Checkpoint System Anthropic has released major updates to Claude Code, now powered by Sonnet 4.5. The standout feature is a checkpoint system that automatically saves code state before each edit — rewind instantly with Esc Esc or the /rewind command. Also new: a native VS Code extension (beta), improved terminal with searchable prompt history, and a renamed Claude Agent SDK with subagent and hook support. Developers are already building financial compliance agents, cybersecurity agents, and code debugging agents with the SDK.
Microsoft Builds Out AI Agent Ecosystem Wide Microsoft's annual developer conference Build 2025 cemented AI agents as the hub of the company's strategy. Redmond is delivering first-party support for Model Context Protocol (MCP) across its entire agent platform — GitHub, Copilot Studio, Dynamics 365, Azure AI Foundry, Semantic Kernel, and Windows 11. The company also introduced NLWeb, an open protocol for building agentified web applications. Azure AI Foundry Agent Service is now generally available with built-in observability tooling.
Gartner: AI Agents and AI-Ready Data Are the Year's Fastest-Moving Technologies According to the Gartner Hype Cycle 2025, AI agents and AI-ready data are the two fastest-advancing technologies right now. Gartner notes a strategic industry shift away from generative AI as a central focus toward foundational enablers for scalable AI delivery. Multimodal AI and AI TRiSM (Trust, Risk and Security Management) are expected to reach mainstream adoption within five years.
Model Context Protocol — The New Internet Standard for AI Agents
MCP, launched by Anthropic in November 2024, has become the closest thing to an OpenAPI equivalent for agentic AI in record time. The following companies have officially adopted the protocol:
- OpenAI (March 2025)
- Google DeepMind (April 2025)
- Microsoft (May 2025)
- Amazon
- Anthropic donated the protocol to the Agentic AI Foundation in December 2025
Microsoft and GitHub have joined the MCP Steering Committee. An updated authorization specification enables users to leverage existing sign-in methods to grant agents and LLM-powered apps access to data and services. An MCP Server Registry Service is in development for public and private centralized MCP server registries.
By the Numbers: AI in Reality
- 15 million developers already using GitHub Copilot
- 230,000+ organizations have built AI agents with Copilot Studio, including 90% of Fortune 500 companies
- 1,900+ partner-hosted and Microsoft-hosted AI models available in Azure AI Foundry
- Stanford Health Care uses Microsoft's healthcare agent orchestrator to reduce administrative burden for tumor board preparation
Tools to Test This Week
- Claude Code checkpoint system — experiment boldly with large-scale refactoring tasks
- Azure AI Foundry Agent Service — orchestrate multiple specialized agents with built-in observability
- MCP servers in Semantic Kernel — connect agents to enterprise data sources with a standardized protocol
